Vehicles owned or used by a business can obtain adequate/appropriate insurance coverage from a commercial auto insurance policy. In some instances a private passenger policy with an optional endorsement to include coverage for business (artisan) use is sufficient. This endorsement is often utilized to provide protection for artisans. An artisan is a skilled craftsman e.g. painter, cabinet installer, electrician. Each auto insurance company has their own unique definition for artisan use of vehicles. A commercial or business policy is generally required for these circumstances: vehicles are being used to pick up and deliver goods and or people, protection is needed for employees when they drive the vehicle or have employee owned vehicles used for the business, for higher coverage limits than are offered in a personal policy, multiple vehicles (fleets) utilized by artisans, business equipment is permanently attached to vehicle. Commercial or business auto insurance policies are very similar to personal or private passenger policies. Both types of polices: are contracts comprised of a declarations page and policy jacket or booklet, provide the same basic coverage options, offer similar money saving discounts, are provided and serviced by the same insurance companies. The difference between these two types of auto insurance polices are the types of vehicles being insured and/or how the vehicles are being used. The type and usage of vehicles changes the risk exposure for the business and insuring company necessitating a different algorithm to determine premium. This is the primary reason for the two different types of policies. Applicants for auto insurance policies are questioned regarding the use of all vehicles being insured. Any usage other than routine commuting related to the course of your occupation will require a personal auto policy with an endorsement for business/artisan use or a commercial auto policy. Failure to maintain the appropriate policy or endorsement can lead to a claim denial. The right type of policy and coverage is essential to provide adequate protection for the business owner. Calculating the appropriate premium for a business or commercial risk exposure on a policy does not necessarily translate to a higher rate.
